SHOW SYNOPSIS Jack Paar is the host of The Tonight Show in 1958 and has his favorite guest, Oscar Levant, on his show. Oscar is a brilliant pianist, character actor and comedian, who is deeply affected by mental illness and drug addiction.
DESCRIPTION OF OSCAR LEVANT A celebrated but troubled figure known for his comedic genius, piano virtuosity, and candid discussions about his mental health and addiction on live television. The play explores the duality of his public charisma and private turmoil.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE Advanced piano skills - The play ends with Oscar’s 7-minute, live piano performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
OTHER CHALLENGES The performer portraying the role of Oscar Levant will need comedic skills while also capturing the essence of Levant’s mind tortured by mental illness.
